Not all branded titles are born the same

This week: a Cayman with zero drama, a 996 worth reconsidering, and more

Another issue, another bunch of Porsche cars and their interesting stories.

This week we look at:

  • One-owner cars (exciting!),

  • Cars that will make you question your stance on branded titles (scary!)

  • And cars from folks going through real hardships (life doesn't ask when it punches you in the face).

C'est la vie.

Onwards!

Macadamia Brown Metallic 2008 Porsche 987.1 Cayman with 63,000 miles and a single owner since new, listed for $24,000 in Naples, FL.
PROS
  • Single owner car

  • Only 63,000 miles

  • Cared throughout its life

CONS
  • The color or automatic transmission may not be for you

This minty OG Cayman is looking for its second owner ever.

I’ve been missing a nice 987.1 Cayman that I could feature front and center. This Macadamia Brown Metallic bucked the trend.

The seller purchased this 987.1 new at Hendrick Porsche, in Charlotte, NC, in 2008.

Clean title, only 63,000 miles, and no mechanical issues.

Always garaged, never abused, and never tracked.

All original paperwork, including window sticker.

Many cars like this ask for $30K, if not more. But this seller is ready to pass the torch without over-hyping it. That's the Pepita way.

Market Report

The average base Cayman of this generation is a silver car with 100K+ miles, selling for $18K-24K. Cars in great condition, with lower miles like this one are routinely asking for 30, even 35K dollars (although not necessarily moving at those numbers).

This one-owner car that has been cared for represents great value at $24K.

What You (and Your Mechanic) Should Know

2008 987.1 base Caymans use the robust 2.7L engine with the redesigned IMS bearing (sub-1% failure rate) and no bore scoring concerns.

The seller notes the Bridgestone Potenza tires at +95%, which is great, but check the dates.

Ask how the car has been used recently, and try to see receipts for actual maintenance throughout its life.

Best of the Rest

These cars also passed the Pepita filter this week:

🔗 This 2002 manual 996 Carrera for $26,000. A couple of imperfections, but presents well overall, with the IMS bearing done in 2021, upgraded bucket seats with neat plaid upholstery. The fellow selling has had life throw him a serious curveball recently, and is letting the car go to deal with it. Under 250 miles since he bought it.

🔗 This bright Guards Red 987.1 Boxster for only $13,900. Tidy, manual, garaged, clean title, new tires, and more.

🔗 This 2007 black over tan Cayman for $19,500. Some cosmetic issues, but stock, affordable, and with $20,000 in recent maintenance.

🔗 This 2002 996 Carrera, with a long long list of pluses, but a branded title as a main drawback. Vertex engine rebuild at 63K miles with a permanent IMS fix, full suspension replacement, no leaks, good rubber all around, and Technic package. The kind of spec list that makes you wonder if all branded titles are really born the same. This was a side swipe. The seller is offering the full repair documentation. You’ll be able to form your own opinion, and may end up with an extremely sorted 996 for the price of a beat up one.

🔗 This 1999 996 Carrera for only $17,500. Yes, another early 996. When it rains it pours. The description is extremely detailed, complete maintenance records included, and the seller explains with openness why they're pricing it at a discount despite the good condition (another title story).

Out There

T-boned 2008 Porsche 997 911 Carrera with significant side damage, listed for $1,524 in Fairview, PA as owner considers parting out.

"Thinking about parting out my 997.1"

"Engine is solid and sounds healthy"

Even if they're just testing the waters, the contrast between the slight "I know what I have" energy and the sorry state of the car made me chuckle.

Poor thing, not even the PCA sticker could protect this 911 from being t-boned.

Adopted Puppies

Lots and lots of happy puppies this week.

The two $17K 911s from the last issue didn't last long. How could they?

The super affordable $36K 997.2 cab also sold fast.

Even the Forest Green Metallic 987.1 Cayman S is gone, showing that special specs remain well sought after.

Four Pepita Picks marked SOLD: a grey 996 coupe, a silver 996 Cabriolet, a dark grey 997.2 Cabriolet, and a Forest Green Metallic 987.1 Cayman S.
