Easter brings egg-shaped car deals

This week: Two 911 for $17K, two 997.2 debuts, and more

Welcome to this Easter special edition of Pepita Picks. We’re focusing on deals today.

I'm particularly fond of the two 996s below, each one standing out for different reasons, and both excellent value.

I’m also excited about 997 .2 Carreras making their Pepita debut this week, cars that normally live outside our range.

Plus a bunch of other treats.

Enjoy the Porsche egg hunt!

911s for $17K. That’s it.

PROS
  • Excellent prices

  • Great cosmetic condition

  • Lots of recent maintenance on the coupe

CONS
  • 191K miles on the coupe

  • Cabriolet without detailed description

These two cars are excellent value.

The roofed Carrera has a staggering 191K miles. And yet, seeing how it presents, I take that as a badge of honor, something I would repeat proudly at meets.

It's been a California car for most of its life, always garaged, over 50 service records on CARFAX, tons of recent maintenance and pictures (seriously, I got tired of scrolling), and a knowledgeable seller.

The automatic transmission will deter some, but you are getting an otherwise great $17K Porsche 911 (read that again, if you must).

The Cab Discount is well and alive with the next one. You'll have to ask the dealer for actual details, and they ask for an additional $1.5K in processing fees (big boo), and yet for under $20K you're getting a Carrera 4 Cabriolet, gorgeous color combination, manual transmission, and just 68K miles on the clock.

Two affordable ways to join the dream 911 club, without mortgaging your lives for it.

Market Report

996s with high mileage and wear can be found for under $20,000. But this particular coupe is a .2 from a knowledgeable seller, with a long history of maintenance and care. It reminds me of this other high mileage 996, but at an even better price.

Cabriolets live in the $15-20K range, but this one stands out for offering an interesting color combination, manual transmission (rare in cabs), low miles and good cosmetic condition.

What You (and Your Mechanic) Should Know

These 2002 Carreras have the larger 3.6L engine with VarioCam Plus, new Turbo-style headlights, glovebox, and smaller improvements introduced for the .2 revision.

Neither one mentions IMS bearing upgrades. Especially with the Cabriolet, get the full service history and consider a pre-purchase inspection depending on your conversation with the dealer.

Best of the Rest

These cars also passed the Pepita filter this week:

πŸ”— This 2009 997.2 Carrera S, manual, cab for only $37,995. Found by reader Alex, it's the first 997.2 car ever featured in Pepita. These .2 refreshes are normally priced quite high, so this one is an excellent deal.

πŸ”— This other 997.2, a sleek white coupe. Some known flaws and higher miles. But a one-owner 997.2 for $32,000.

πŸ”— This 2006 987.1 Cayman S in a classy color combo, good options and low miles. At $29,995 it's priced much higher than my usual .1 recommendations, but the uncommon spec and the low miles are worth a look.

πŸ”— This other 987.1 Cayman, Atlas Grey Metallic, manual transmission, only 80K miles, presenting really well, for $24,750.

πŸ”— This 1999 996. Another week, another cable throttle car. With recent maintenance but a handful of bits needing sorting out. At $22,500, it should leave you with money in the pocket to address them comfortably.

Out There

Interior of a 2008 Porsche 987.1 Cayman S showing the full Terra Cotta leather cabin, including steering wheel, sport seats, center console and manual shifter.

Porsche calls this interior Terra Cotta. It's bold, and I love it (maybe not for me, but I love it nonetheless).

This 2008 Cayman S has cosmetic choices to spare. The car itself may be priced too high considering the miles, so I'd recommend it only if it’s the specific spec you've always been after.

Adopted Puppies

A couple of Best of the Rest cars sold recently, including a 1999 996 for $20,000 and last issue’s 2-owner 996 C4S cab for only $25,911.
