A $30,000 Carrera GT (sort of)
This week: A stylish 981 Cayman, rapid-fire picks, and an affordable hypercar
The weather is absolutely atrocious. The market is cold as well.
That's why this week's picks are all about the vibes. Bright colors, special touches, blasts from the past⦠from a Carmine Red 981 with chrome wheels to a $30K Carrera GT (sort of).
Let's cozy up together and wait for the storm to pass.
Onwards!

Small details, big personality.
PROS
| CONS
|
Small but important details make this car different.
First, the color. Carmine Red is a deeper, richer shade than the Guards Red you see everywhere.
Then the chrome wheels. They completely set the car apart, and I'm not even a chrome wheels person myself.
It's amazing how just a small, bold touch transforms this car from "the red Porsche" to "the Cayman with the Chrome Wheels".
The fundamentals are still there: barely 70,000 miles, minimal wear, a couple of tasteful upgrades, recent service.
With weather like this, we need a car that makes us feel something.
Market Report
981 Caymans have become such a great way to get into Porsche ownership with a modern feel. Cars in good condition with over 100K miles and a PDK transmission routinely sell in the mid-20s (we found many examples of this in the past).
This one is asking at the higher end of that range, but it makes sense. The rarer Carmine Red paint, chrome wheels, and low miles support the premium.
The same way that I love a base silver car for a steal price, I'm totally in favor of paying more for the spec that speaks to your heart.
What You (and Your Mechanic) Should Know
Base 981s are bulletproof: no IMS concerns, no bore scoring. Water pump typically needs replacement at 60-80K miles. PDK fluid needs changing every 60K miles.
Your main inspection checklist: Verify the PDK was serviced recently (it was due 10K miles ago) and confirm water pump status since this car is in the replacement window.
Best of the Rest
These cars also passed the Pepita filter this week:
π This well-maintained manual 987.1 Cayman for just $15,000. Garage kept, weekend driven, under 100K miles, and priced thousands below typical 987.1s with similar mileage.
π This Guards Red 996 C4S for $35,000, hitting the sweet spot for C4S pricing. Tiptronic transmission, IMS upgrade done, and PCA-member owned with detailed options list.
π This manual 996 C4S cabriolet with IMS and clutch already done, only 78K miles, and priced at just $27,000 thanks to the cabriolet discount.
π This one-owner manual 987.1 Boxster, garaged since new and finished in Speed Yellow with matching yellow seat belts.
π This 1998 986 Boxster in the classic silver over red interior combination from the original press photos. Only 30,000 original miles and in excellent condition.
Out There
From the listing: "I want $30k for this car. A real one is $1.5 million. Donβt bother low balling!"
When I started this newsletter to bring you the best affordable Porsche picks, I never could have dreamed of finding a Carrera GT hypercar for only 30 grand.
If last week we met Frankenstein's monster, this thing is a close relative: A Pontiac Fiero chassis, with a Chevy V8 engine, a Porsche 944 transmission, and Audi parts to tie it all together.
The pictures in the listing are a hoot. Check it out.

See you next week with more affordable picks!
